Xeomin is made by Merz Pharmaceuticals, part of Merz Aesthetics. Merz is a privately held, family-owned German company founded in Frankfurt in 1908 and still owned by the founding family. Like BOTOX Cosmetic, its active ingredient is a form of botulinum toxin type A, a protein that, once injected into a muscle, blocks the nerve signals that trigger contraction and so temporarily reduces the muscle's activity. What sets Xeomin apart is its manufacturing process: the toxin is purified to remove the accessory ('complexing') proteins that surround the toxin molecule in some other products, which the manufacturer markets as a more purified, or 'naked,' toxin. The FDA first approved Xeomin in 2010 to treat two neurological muscle conditions, then approved it in 2011 for the cosmetic treatment of glabellar lines (frown lines); in 2024 the FDA further approved it for simultaneous treatment of the forehead, frown, and crow's-feet areas in one session.
