Sciton

Sciton

manufacturer of medical and aesthetic laser and light devices

Sciton is the company that designs and builds the laser and light-based devices described on this page. It was founded in 1997 in Palo Alto, California, by laser physicists Dr. Jim Hobart and Dr. Dan Negus, and the company still designs and manufactures its systems there. Rather than making one single machine, Sciton builds base platforms (called JOULE and mJOULE) that a clinic can equip with different handpieces and light or laser modules, such as BBL, HALO, MOXI and ProFractional, to deliver different treatments on the same base unit. Sciton describes itself as 100% employee-owned. Each of its devices is reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration through the 510(k) pathway, meaning the FDA found the device 'substantially equivalent' to devices already legally on the market, which is a lower bar than FDA 'approval' of a new medicine.
