Radiesse®
calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) dermal filler
Radiesse is an injectable filler made by Merz Aesthetics. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse is made from calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral compound already found in human bone, formed into small smooth microspheres and suspended in a water-based gel. When injected beneath the skin, the gel carrier adds volume right away and is gradually absorbed by the body, while the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres remain in place for a period of time and are understood to encourage the body to form its own new collagen around them. Radiesse was originally developed by BioForm Medical, which Merz acquired in February 2010. The FDA approved two versions of Radiesse on December 22, 2006: one for correcting facial fat loss associated with HIV, and a second for correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds; the FDA later approved Radiesse for additional uses, including loss of jawline contour and wrinkles in the chest (décolleté) area.
