Plated Skin Science makes topical serums containing platelet-derived exosomes, which are tiny particles naturally released by platelets (a component of blood involved in clotting and wound healing) that carry proteins and other cell-signaling molecules. The company says its technology grew out of more than two decades of research at the Mayo Clinic into how platelets help repair tissue, which it has licensed to formulate its serums at its lab in Rochester, Minnesota. Plated states that the platelets it uses are obtained from FDA-regulated U.S. blood donation banks, from selected donors after the standard transfusion window has passed, and are then processed to isolate the exosomes. Regulatory status here is genuinely unsettled and worth stating plainly: as of 2026, no exosome product, topical or injected, has received FDA approval for any cosmetic or medical use, and Plated itself describes its own serums as a cosmetic product line rather than a drug. Separately, the FDA has issued a series of public warnings, starting with a December 2019 safety notification and continuing with additional warning letters into 2026, about serious adverse events and unapproved disease-treatment claims tied to injected or infused exosome products sold at some clinics; those warnings and enforcement actions have targeted injectable products rather than Plated's topical serums by name, but they reflect the same underlying fact that no exosome product of any kind currently carries FDA approval.
