Emsella®
electromagnetic pelvic floor muscle stimulation device
Emsella is a chair-like device, also made by BTL Industries, that a patient sits on fully clothed. It uses the same underlying HIFEM (high-intensity focused electromagnetic) technology as BTL's body devices, but aims the energy at the pelvic floor muscles rather than the abdomen or limbs. The magnetic field causes the pelvic floor muscles to contract repeatedly during a session, which is intended to help strengthen muscles that support bladder control. BTL Emsella received FDA clearance in 2018 as a non-implanted electrical continence device for stress, urge and mixed urinary incontinence in women; the treatment involves a series of in-office sessions and requires no incisions, injections or anesthesia. It is unrelated in technology to Exion, Emface and Emsculpt Neo in that it does not use radiofrequency or ultrasound at all, relying solely on electromagnetic muscle stimulation aimed at a specific muscle group.
