Emsculpt Neo®

combined electromagnetic muscle-stimulation and radiofrequency body-contouring device

Emsculpt Neo is made by BTL Industries, a medical device company that also makes Emface, Emsella and Exion. In one applicator it combines two energies at the same time: HIFEM (high-intensity focused electromagnetic) pulses that make the muscle underneath contract repeatedly, and radiofrequency energy that warms the fat layer above it. The device is used on the abdomen and on areas such as the buttocks, thighs, calves and arms as a noninvasive alternative to surgery for people who want help with muscle tone and localized fat. It was brought to the U.S. market as a combination of BTL's earlier Emsculpt (muscle stimulation only) and a fat-heating radiofrequency function, and industry reporting places its original FDA clearance and U.S. launch around 2019 to 2020, though sources are not consistent on the exact year. In October 2024, BTL announced additional FDA clearance for the same device for musculoskeletal rehabilitation uses, such as preventing disuse atrophy after injury or surgery, rather than purely cosmetic toning. It differs from BTL's original Emsculpt (electromagnetic muscle stimulation only, no radiofrequency) and from Exion (radiofrequency and ultrasound, with no electromagnetic muscle stimulation).

The record

  • Made by BTL Industries, Inc., headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Combines HIFEM (high-intensity focused electromagnetic) muscle stimulation with synchronized radiofrequency heating delivered through the same applicator.
  • Trade press describes it as launched to the U.S. market and FDA cleared in the 2019-2020 period for noninvasive lipolysis (fat reduction) and improvement of abdominal muscle tone; sources differ on whether 2019 or 2020 is the correct year for the original clearance.
  • On October 8, 2024, BTL announced new FDA clearance for the device covering prevention/retardation of disuse atrophy, muscle re-education, maintaining or increasing range of motion, immediate post-surgical stimulation of calf muscles to help prevent venous thrombosis, relaxation of muscle spasms, and increasing local blood circulation.
  • Distinct from BTL's original Emsculpt, which uses HIFEM muscle stimulation without a radiofrequency component.
